Training and Professional Background
After qualifying from Nottingham Medical School, Mr Hornby pursued a diverse range of specialised training opportunities in general surgery and upper GI surgery.
His early experience includes a trauma surgery elective in Houston, Texas, followed by completing his basic surgical training in Lincoln and higher training in the South West of England.
He completed his specialist training with an Upper GI Fellowship at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and an observership at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong.
These roles provided valuable experience within large teaching hospital settings and helped shape his approach as a consultant general and upper GI surgeon, offering patients a high standard of care informed by international best practice.
Clinical Expertise and Clinical Interests
Mr Hornby’s clinical interests encompass a broad spectrum of upper gastrointestinal conditions. These include oesophagogastric cancer, advanced laparoscopic surgery, reflux surgery, and both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including gastroscopy.
He also specialises in the treatment of benign conditions such as gallstone disease, hiatus hernia, and abdominal wall hernia, including hernia surgery. Procedures such as gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) are performed using minimally invasive techniques wherever appropriate.
In addition to advanced laparoscopic surgery, Mr Hornby offers robotic surgery in the private setting and is one of the leading UK upper GI specialists using the Versius robotic platform by Cambridge Medical Robotics. As an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and GI surgeon, his focus is on improving patient outcomes and quality of life through safe, effective gastrointestinal surgery.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Hornby is a committed surgical educator. He has designed and led multiple courses focused on developing both technical and non-technical skills for surgeons, recognising the importance of ongoing training in improving outcomes across surgery.
He has held senior leadership roles within the Association of Surgeons in Training, serving as both President and Director of Education. In recognition of his contribution to surgical education, he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2013.
