Expert Upper GI and General Surgeon services

Caring, approachable support for complete patient-centered care

At The Hornby Group, we provide expert upper GI and general surgery with a strong focus on clear communication and personal care. Patients are supported by consistent, consultant-led guidance from their first appointment through treatment and recovery.

Led by an experienced consultant general surgeon, Mr Steve Hornby, our focus is on clear communication, careful assessment, and delivering treatment that supports both short-term recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Following a detailed consultation, your symptoms and medical history are carefully reviewed to reach an accurate diagnosis. We focus on providing clear information and, where appropriate, progressing to a personalised treatment plan without unnecessary delay.

When surgery is required, treatment is delivered using modern, minimally invasive techniques in advanced clinical facilities, supporting safer procedures and smoother recovery.

Whether you are seeking clarity around symptoms or exploring treatment options, our upper GI surgeon’s role is to provide clear information, reassurance, and expert guidance at every stage.

Three simple steps

Initial consultation

Book an appointment with a consultant general surgeon, specialising in upper GI surgery, to discuss your symptoms, concerns, and medical history. You will have time to ask questions and receive clear information about possible next steps.

 Personalised treatment plan

Care tailored to you. Following your consultation, a clear treatment plan is created based on your diagnosis, needs, and goals. This may include further investigations, treatment options, or preparation for surgery where appropriate.

Treatment and recovery support

Care that continues beyond treatment. If surgery is required, it is delivered in modern clinical facilities, with recovery supported through onsite physiotherapy and follow-up care. Ongoing reviews ensure your recovery stays on track.

Why patients choose us

Patients are often referred to us or self-refer when symptoms begin to impact daily life.

Some seek advice for ongoing digestive discomfort or acid reflux that has not responded to initial treatment.

Where required, surgical procedures are carried out in modern, fully equipped facilities that prioritise patient safety and comfort, with high clinical standards.

Theatres and recovery areas meet current healthcare standards and are supported by experienced clinical teams. Patients benefit from a calm, well-organised environment, with care delivered efficiently and professionally from admission through discharge.

Our role is not to rush decisions. Our upper gastrointestinal surgeon will take the time to explain options, discuss risks and benefits, and ensure patients feel informed before proceeding. Where surgery is appropriate, it is planned carefully and delivered to recognised clinical standards.

Our Surgery & Endoscopy Services

Gallbladder surgery involves removing the gallbladder itself, rather than just the gallstones. While gallstones are responsible for causing pain and other symptoms, the underlying issue is a gallbladder that continues to form them. Removing the gallbladder treats the source of the problem, helping to prevent further stone formation and the return of symptoms.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive condition where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing ongoing irritation and discomfort. Whilst there are readily effective medical therapies, surgery may be considered when symptoms persist despite other treatments.

A hernia is a lump that usually appears in the abdomen or groin when tissue, often part of the bowel, pushes through a weak area in the muscle wall. Hernia surgery repairs this weakness to relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.

Endoscopy is used to examine the upper digestive system, including the oesophagus and stomach. Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy can help identify the cause of symptoms and, where appropriate, treat certain conditions during the procedure.

Our Physiotherapy & Pilates

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Focused physiotherapy to assess and treat pain, stiffness, and movement issues affecting muscles, joints, and soft tissues, supporting recovery and long-term function.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Targeted rehabilitation programmes designed to support recovery from sports-related injuries, helping patients regain strength, mobility, and confidence to return to activity safely.

Matwork and Equipment Pilates

Structured Pilates sessions using matwork and specialist equipment to improve strength, flexibility, posture, and controlled movement, tailored to individual ability and goals.

Physiotherapy and Pilates for Post-Surgical Recovery

Successful outcomes depend not only on the treatment by the upper GI and general surgeon, but also on recovery afterwards.

Our onsite physiotherapy service allows patients to receive tailored support following surgery. This may include help with mobility, strength, posture, and return to normal activity. Pilates-based rehabilitation can also support controlled movement and long-term conditioning where appropriate.

Because our clinicians work closely together, recovery plans are aligned with the surgical care provided. Patients do not need to explain their history repeatedly or coordinate between separate providers. This integrated model supports safer recovery and better patient experience.
